Withybrook Acre

Logo for Withybrook Acres and link to website Welcome to Withybrook Acre

Withybrook Acre is a small triangle of land in a quiet corner of south Leicestershire which was left over when the great fields of the nearby village were enclosed in the 18th century.

Willow has been grown here, and a stream runs along the lower boundary of the site. An old greenhouse still stands as a reminder of the time when two ladies from the village grew fruit and vegetables to sell in the local shop.

After years of neglect, Withybrook Acre is being brought back to life. The site is being cleared of rubbish and the woodland area is being managed. Working with the Environment Agency we have cleared the stream which runs along the lower boundary of our site. New fruit trees have been planted to complement the five very old apple trees which still produce a fine crop every year. Raised beds have been created on the brick footings of the old greenhouses in which a range of vegetables are being grown.

We are managing the boundary hedges by traditional laying techniques. We are being guided by a farmer who used these techniques for many years.  We plan to coppice the willow to provide us with material for fencing.  Four horses live next door. We provide them with windfall apples, and they return the compliment with plenty of manure!

We have the space here to experiment. We can try different varieties on different soil preparations. We will record our efforts and the results (good or bad!)

This is the continuing story of this land.
