Robert James Lees unveiledh

Robert James Lees was born in Hinckley in Leicestershire in 1849.  His uncle owned two public houses on Bond Street. At that time his father was landlord of the Queen's Head

Lees became a journalist and author, but is most noted as a medium.

It is claimed that he worked as a medium for Queen Victoria and assisted the police in the apprehension of Jack the Ripper, the Whitechapel Murderer of 1888

A blue commemorative plaque was commissioned by the Hinckley Civic Society and unveiled by a descendant of Lees on Saturday 2 May 2009

There is more on the life and legacy of Robert James Lees - the truth and the fiction - at the only website dedicated to this unusual man here

The Treasurer of the Hinckley Civic Society is Greg Drozdz, who was instrumental in organising the unveiling ceremony and in contacting members of the Lees family worldwide

The plaque was unveiled by Jane Moon, a great grand-daughter of Lees.  Also present was the Mayor of Hinckley, Councillor Jeffrey Bannister

The plaque, which has been placed on the former bakery between the Queen's Head and the Black Horse public houses Lees' birthplace is the small building between the two public houses, now a flower shop
