The Beatles
crossing the road again

Beatles Abbey Road album cover The Beatless - Abbey Road revisited in Leicester

"At some point, the album was going to be titled Everest after the brand of cigarettes I used to smoke," recalls Geoff Emerick.

The idea included a cover photo in the Himalayas but by the time the group was to take the photo they decided to call it Abbey Road and take the photo outside the studio on 8 August 1969.

The cover photograph was taken by photographer Iain Macmillan. He was given only ten minutes around 11:30 that morning to take the photo. That cover photograph has since become one of the most famous and most imitated album covers in recording history.

The Volkswagen Beetle parked next to the zebra crossing belonged to one of the people living in the apartment across from the recording studio. After the album came out, the number plate was stolen repeatedly from the car.

In 1986, the car was sold at an auction for $23,000 and is currently on display at the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, Germany

The challenge was to re-create the incomparable - the famous album cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road LP album - in the centre of Leicester

The reason - to raise funds through the sales of a CD recorded by Leicester tribute band The BeatLeics

The disc was recorded live at the BBC Leicester Open Centre and included 'Marie's The Name (Of His Latest Flame)', 'Apache', 'Something' and 'Eight Days A Week'.

The undeniable problem - there are five musicians in the 21st Century band.  The famous five are Chris Highton, Tim Wilkinson, Tony Wadsworth, Pete Hancock and James Wilkinson.

We DID manage to park a VW Beatle - in the right colour - in just the right place!   Check it out!

The original photographer, Iain Macmillan, had just ten minutes to take his photograph;  this 21st Century version, taken early on a Saturday morning in Peacock Lane, Leicester, took at least twice that time.
